Do you set the thermostat in your Greensboro, North Carolina, home, and then forget it? Or do you keep poking at the buttons trying to find a comfortable temperature? If you’re the sort of person who can’t stop messing with the thermostat, it may be time to stop. It doesn’t help your house feel more comfortable, and it wastes energy.
You Can’t Make It Cool or Heat Any Faster
Some people turn the thermostat up or down trying to make the house warm or cool faster. Unfortunately, things don’t work like that. Your HVAC system works at the same speed, whether you’re trying to change the temperature by one degree or by 10. So when you’re sweating heavily and coming in from outside, don’t put the thermostat on 68 because you want to hit 72 faster. It’ll hit 72 at the same exact speed, but then it’ll keep cooling and waste more energy.
You Keep It From Maintaining
The thermostat’s job is to maintain the temperature in your home. When it senses the temperature moves above or below your desired setting, it kicks on the HVAC system until things are settled again. This maintenance happens, no matter what the outdoor temperature is. You don’t need to change your AC from 76 to 70 just because it’s 90 degrees outside today. Your thermostat will keep it 76 indoors regardless.
You’re Wasting Energy
When you mess with the thermostat all the time, you’re wasting energy. Asking the HVAC system to keep switching temperatures means it has to cycle on and off more often than it would if it were on a schedule. If you’re unhappy with the temperature in your home, set a new schedule, and then stop touching the thermostat.
