Ductless/Mini Split Systems

Twenty years ago, the concept of a ductless system was relatively new in the United States. However, it didn’t take long for their popularity to grow across the entire nation. Ductless systems are more popular than ever as people use them to either augment their existing HVAC systems or to create a customized solution for their individual indoor climate problems.

What Is a Ductless HVAC System?

Basically, ductless systems are individual units designed and installed for the purpose of heating or cooling one single space. They are completely independent of a central heat pump or traditional air duct system, which is how they got their name.

Because they focus on heating and cooling only the space you are in, while you are in it, they are considered highly efficient and easily customizable. Installation is also quite flexible, allowing for insertion into a couple of different places along your wall. This is a huge improvement over basic in-window A/C units or portable plug-in heaters, which are extremely limited in their installation options.

Why Choose a Ductless Option?

Central air and duct systems are often difficult and expensive to install in existing construction. By contrast, ductless systems are easy to install and can be used to supplement a traditional, existing duct system. Plus, they allow you to keep the various spaces in your home at different temperatures. That could mean an end to the age-old fight for control of the thermostat.

Ductless systems also surpass many options when it comes to energy efficiency. By limiting the heating or cooling to a single space, you use less energy overall. This makes sense when you think about how a light switch works. It’s unlikely your whole house is controlled by a single switch; instead you flip the switch to turn on the lights only in the room you’re currently in. Ductless systems operate under those same principles of efficiency.
